FAQ
Uncovering Wild – FAQ Sheet
Where is the safari camp located?
Our safari camp is set in Botswana, primarily within the Okavango Delta and surrounding wildlife concessions. Vumbura is a paramount area, with meandering water channels close to the Panhandle where the mouth of the flood begins.
What makes this area special?
The Okavango Delta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest inland delta in the world. Seasonal flooding creates diverse habitats that attract abundant wildlife year-round, including water birds such as the African Jacana skipping across water lilies, herons probing the waters for fish, large predators, plains game, crocodiles, hippos, and—bound to the papyrus in the water channels—the very secretive aquatic antelope, the Sitatunga!
Safari Offers & Experience
What type of safari experience is offered?
We offer authentic, low-impact photographic and wildlife safaris with a strong focus on nature interpretation, conservation ethics, and guest immersion. Experiences range from classic game drives, bush walks, and mokoro excursions to specialist photographic safaris and a unique 7-day track and sign experience.
What is a mobile safari?
A mobile safari is a guided experience where guests stay in temporary tented camps that move between wilderness locations based on a planned itinerary. Camps are fully serviced and set up exclusively for each group, offering comfort while remaining close to nature. Stays may range from 2 to 14 days in total.
How do we travel between camps?
Travel is conducted in open 4x4 safari vehicles, allowing for wildlife sightings en route. Game drives often form part of the journey between locations.
Are all safaris guided?
All activities are led by professionally trained and licensed safari guides with extensive local knowledge, tracking skills, and guiding ethics.
How many guests are on each safari?
Group sizes are intentionally kept small, typically a maximum of 8 guests per vehicle, ensuring a personalized experience and optimal wildlife encounters.
Is this safari suitable for first-time safari guests?
Yes. The experience caters to both first-time safari travelers and seasoned safari enthusiasts. Guides adapt their interpretation and pace to guest interests and experience levels.
Accommodation
What type of accommodation is used?
Accommodation varies depending on the itinerary and includes luxury tented camps, mobile safari camps, or semi-permanent camps designed to blend into the natural environment.
Are tents en-suite?
Most fixed camps offer en-suite facilities. Mobile safaris typically use high-quality safari tents with private or shared bush bathroom facilities, depending on the location.
Is electricity available?
While permanent electricity is unavailable in the field, charging facilities for cameras and phones are provided on the vehicles. Tents will be powered by rechargeable lamps and lanterns.
Is Wi-Fi available?
Wi-Fi is unavailable. Guests are encouraged to disconnect to reconnect.
Activities
What activities are included?
Activities may include:
  • Morning and afternoon game drives
  • Walking safaris (where permitted)
  • Mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions (seasonal)
  • Night drives (private concessions only)
  • Photographic workshops (on specialist safaris)
Are activities seasonal?
Yes. Water-based activities depend on annual flood levels, typically peaking between May and August. Game viewing remains excellent year-round.
Wildlife & Photography
What wildlife can guests expect to see?
Guests can expect great numbers of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippo, crocodile, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, and a wide variety of antelope and bird species.
When is the best time to view wildlife?
The dry season (June–October) has a significant concentration of animals due to limited water resources. During the wet season (November–March), animals are more dispersed but the season offers a variety of bird life.
Is wildlife guaranteed?
Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, as animals are free-roaming. However, experienced guides and rich habitats provide consistently excellent viewing.
Safety & Ethics
Is the safari safe?
Safety is a top priority. Our guides are experienced and have extensive training in wildlife behavior, first aid, and emergency procedures. Camp staff follow strict safety protocols. In the very rare situations requiring transport to a hospital, there are emergency flights readily available.
Is there malaria in Botswana?
Malaria is present in certain parts of Botswana, mainly in the northern regions such as the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park, and along the Zambezi/Chobe river systems. Risk is seasonal, with the highest risk during the warmer, wet months (November to May). The risk is very low to negligible in the central and southern regions, including areas such as Nxai Pan and the Kalahari, especially during the dry winter months. Guests should consult their doctor or a travel clinic about malaria prophylaxis.
Do I need specific vaccinations for Botswana?
There are no mandatory vaccinations required for entry into Botswana if you are traveling from Europe, North America, or most other non-yellow fever countries. Yellow Fever vaccination is only required if you are arriving from, or transiting through, a yellow fever-risk country. Proof of vaccination may be requested at immigration in this case.
How close do vehicles get to wildlife?
Wildlife viewing is conducted responsibly and ethically, respecting the animal’s behavior and comfort space at all times. Animals may approach vehicles curiously, often when the animal is relaxed with the presence of the vehicle.
Are walking safaris safe?
Walking safaris are led by armed, qualified guides and conducted only in suitable conditions and seasons (March–November).
Are children allowed?
Due to safety requirements, only children over 12 are permitted.
Transfers & Logistics
How do guests get to camp?
Guests take a 45-minute flight via light aircraft from Maun to a nearby airstrip, followed by a short game drive transfer to camp.
